Cambria Berwyn™ Design Information and Inspiration Beyond the Surface

May 27, 2017

From the classic color palette to the inviting details, Cambria’s Berwyn™ design is truly majestic. Its dense and earthy, but understated, shades of creams, grays, and taupes offer a close-to-nature aesthetic and subtle sparkle that will brighten any space without detracting from the warmth.

Slab Cambria Berwyn™

Cambria’s Berwyn™ quartz is a natural stone from their Waterstone Collection and was inspired by the peaks and ridges of the rugged mountain range in the northeast of Wales.

Cambria’s Waterstone collection is where “dynamic designs echo the stormy relationship between sea and shore.” These unique patterns feature ripples and swirls that call to mind the current of natural waters, which infuse a dimension of movement and interest to your space. Subtle colors mimic the natural variations of straight-from-the-earth stone, but offer the enhanced features and durability of Cambria quartz.

Technical information

Cambria Berwyn™ Residential Dining Room Table

As with all of the 140+ designs offered by Cambria, Berwyn™ quartz is perfected by Cambria and embraces the beauty of natural quartz while enhancing the stone’s durability. Cambria products are harder than granite or marble, rated a 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale, so their surfaces are unlikely to crack or scratch. Cambria is made of 93% natural quartz, one of the hardest minerals on Earth, and 7% resin. And since the surfaces are nonporous, Cambria quartz doesn’t absorb liquids or food, which can cause staining and bacterial growth within the countertop, resulting in a more hygienic surface. Cambria is NSF-51 certified for food and splash zone use. Cambria is also GREENGUARD certified as a low-emitting product for indoor air quality.

Perhaps best of all, Cambria surfaces are maintenance-free – they never need to be sealed or reconditioned, and cleaning requires no more than a warm, soapy cloth. They’re also heat-resistant, so the design won’t fade due to ambient heat near a fireplace, hot stove, or heat styling appliances. Sudden and/or rapid changes in temperature could harm any natural stone, so use of a hot pad or trivet is always recommended.

Cambria designs are ideal for use throughout your home, from wall cladding, to fireplace surrounds, to kitchen countertops and bathroom vanities. You can customize the thickness of your slab to the project at hand, since Cambria designs are available in 1cm*, 2cm*, and 3cm thicknesses. (*Special Order)

Finish options

Cambria Berwyn™ Edge Closeup

Cambria’s Berwyn™ design is available in Cambria’s two finishes: the standard Cambria High Gloss, which offers mirror-like shine, and the newly unveiled Cambria Matte™, an appealing low-sheen alternative that provides the same superior performance and maintenance-free benefits.

Cambria’s High Gloss finish provides a luster and smoothness that brings to mind the most high-end marble. Although some natural stones will show wear quickly, as the polished surface dulls under traffic, Cambria’s enhanced durability ensures that the sheen will stay lustrous. A high gloss finish for the Berwyn™ design is perfect for creating a luxurious aura, and capturing and reflecting the light in an extraordinary way.

The Cambria Matte™ finish embraces the benefits of honed stone, but with the durability and nonporous nature of Cambria quartz, which requires no sealing to protect from stains or wear. Like honed marble or granite, the softer texture and low-sheen appearance of Cambria’s Matte™ finish is perfect for designers and homeowners who wish to embrace the earthy tones of Berwyn™ for a rustic aesthetic in their home or office.

Edge Profile Options

Cambria makes it even easier to customize your project to complete your vision, offering 19 different edge options for countertops. Whether you’re looking for ornate and elegant, sleek and streamlined, or rustic and natural, there’s an option that will provide the perfect finishing touch. Because Cambria’s designs run throughout the entire surface, just like a marble or granite, any natural stone edge is achievable to display the beautiful design.

The Berwyn™ design is so versatile that it can easily be used with any of the Cambria edge profile options offered in your area.

Design Tips and Tricks

Cambria Berwyn™ Countertop in Residential Kitchen

The warm neutral tones that make up the Berwyn™ design are perfect for any space, from the home to the office. The visually-intriguing, yet understated design can easily be dressed up for a sophisticated, impressive space, or downplayed for a more casual feel.

At home, a Berwyn™ countertop in the kitchen would be ideal to pair with white cabinets and backsplashes to infuse a welcoming tone to a classic ivory kitchen. These snowy tones are enduringly popular for home kitchens, but the white-on-white can look cold and sterile, which doesn’t suit homeowners who envision their kitchen as a gathering place for friends and family. The light tones of the Berwyn™ design blend almost seamlessly with white or ivory cabinets, preserving that simplified monochrome aesthetic, but it infuses a cozier undertone that keeps the chill at bay. (Second choice cabinet color: Ash Grey.)

For lovers of the Pinterest-worthy modern farmhouse look, Berwyn™ matches natural wood tones perfectly, whether they’re stained, white- or grey-washed, or showing off their bare beauty. Exposed natural wood shelves, perhaps adorned with antique ceramic jars, would pair beautifully with a Berwyn™ countertop in the kitchen or bath.

As at home as Berwyn™ may be in a casual setting, it won’t look out of place alongside stainless steel or glass pendant lights. The flecks and ripples of natural stone call to mind high-end marble and granite, and with a bright shine like Cambria’s High Gloss™ finish, it can easily be made to suit luxury corporate offices, kitchens, or bathroom vanities.

Once you’re ready to start building your space around your Berwyn™ surface, you can utilize Cambria’s unique Paint Match Tool to choose the ideal shade to pair with the stone. Through a collaboration with Benjamin Moore, Cambria created this helpful tool to suggest four Benjamin Moore paint colors that would complement your chosen Cambria design.

In this case, the tool suggests shades to bring out the neutrals that make up the design: the deep-taupe Sparrow shade, light khaki Misty Air, and greyish-tan Revere Pewter paints are all recommended to harmoniously interplay with your Berwyn™ countertops. Among Cambria’s own offerings, the Marble collection’s classic white Torquay™, Swanbridge™, and Newport™ shades provide varying levels of veining and undertones (from warm Swanbridge™ to cool Torquay™) to offset the Berwyn™ design. Perfect for backsplashes, a matching kitchen island, or wall cladding around a freestanding bathtub alongside a vanity.

Detail

Cambria Berwyn™ Sample

Design samples are a small select cut from a slab; they do not fully exhibit all the design characteristics of the final installed product. Cambria is pure natural quartz. Variation in the natural quartz stone color, pattern, size, shape, and shade are unique and inherent characteristics of this product. Cambria is not a seamless product; seams are visible. Where there are seams the product pattern and shade will change. Color blotches are intended and created into many designs to enhance the natural beauty. Galloway,™ Summerhill,™ Seagrove,™ Langdon,™ Ellesmere,™ Harlech,™ Helmsley,™ Princetown,™ Ella,™ Brittanicca,™ Roxwell,™ and Oakmoor™ have large visible surface movement not reflected in samples. Surface markings are more visible on monotone colors than multi-colored surfaces. Fairbourne™ and White Cliff™ are unique, light colored designs that will show markings during normal use. Galloway, Summerhill, Seagrove, Langdon, Ellesmere, Harlech, Helmsley, Princetown, Rosslyn,™ Minera,™ Parys,™ and Menai™ have natural free-flowing quartz crystals, resulting in surface deviations to the touch and appearance. These variations do not affect performance and do not qualify for product replacement. Cambria is durable and more resistant to surface damage than other stone. However, all stone can be damaged by force and no stone is chip proof. Objects hitting edges, particularly at sinks or dishwashers, may cause chips. Though a minor knife slip will dull the knife and not harm Cambria, no stone surface is scratch proof. Natural stone surfaces can be damaged by sudden and/or rapid change of temperature, especially near the edges, as well as direct and/or sustained heating of the top. Cambria may not withstand the direct transfer of heat from pots and pans and other cooking units such as electric frying pans, griddles, slow cookers, roaster ovens, and heat lamps. Therefore, the use of a closed-weave hot pad or solid trivet like a bread board is always recommended to prevent heating the product. Cambria is not a structural support material and must be supported in every application. 2cm and 3cm thicknesses are for countertops; 1cm thicknesses are for horizontal and vertical surface finishes such as walls, tub and shower surrounds, fireplaces, and tub decks. Semi-polished finishes (1cm) will not shine, and will soil and appear to stain from soiling. Galloway, Summerhill, Seagrove, Langdon, Ellesmere, Harlech, Helmsley, Princetown, Rosslyn, Minera, Parys, Menai, Ella, Brittanicca, Roxwell, and Oakmoor designs are not available in 1cm thickness. The Consistent Perfection
of Cambria Quartz

Cambria Quartz offers the best of natural stone, improved and enhanced for modern life.

As life is constantly changing and shifting, homeowners may find themselves wishing for more counter space in the kitchen, or they may love their countertops so much they’d like to extend the design to another application in their home. With Cambria Quartz, you can be certain that if you return to a design years later, you can still find a matching slab. This makes future renovations or add-ons easy and convenient, as you won’t have to spend time worrying about how to design a cohesive counter space. Homeowners will be pleased to learn that they won’t have to replace their entire countertops, for a small project like adding to a kitchen island or extending a peninsula – there will always be more of the same Cambria design available and you will always be able to find a perfect match.

Cambria also makes it easier to envision how the final product will look within a space. With many natural stone designs, it’s imperative to see each slab in person to better visualize how it will look in your home. The variations in natural stone means that two portions from the same slab can look vastly different. With Cambria quartz, however, you can be certain that the sample will accurately represent the entire piece used for your countertop. Take that sample to your home or business and get a better look at how it works with the light, paint colors, countertops, and your overall design aesthetic without worrying about being surprised by the final product, or having to make a separate trip to see additional slabs.
