Introducing Cambria Matte™, Now Available for All Cambria Designs

November 28, 2017

If you love Cambria quartz surfaces but are looking for a less glitzy option for your countertops, Cambria has some exciting news for you: Cambria Matte™ finish is now available for all of Cambria’s 140+ designs!

Until now, all but 16 of Cambria’s designs have been offered only in the standard Cambria High Gloss finish, which provides a gleaming, mirror-like shine for the surface. The Matte finish option was initially limited to only the most recently released designs, as well as some of the most popular options of the product catalog.

Expanding the Matte finish option to all designs give property owners the ability to create a softener aesthetic for their spaces, both in tactile appeal and design. The added texture and natural feel is ideal for spaces that embrace a rustic or otherwise casual atmosphere – a perfect complement to a restaurant with a local-inspired menu, or a sports gear retailer.

Cambria describes the Matte finish as being “New style and refined elegance unlike anything you’ve ever seen come together with the revolutionary new Cambria Matte finish. These 16 silky smooth surfaces are as tough as iron with the same durability, wipe-and-go convenience, and 100% nonabsorbency of our high gloss surfaces to give you dependable performance you can rely on for life.”

Property owners, interior designers, and homeowners have long coveted a matte or honed finish for their natural stone, including granite and marble. However, the process of honing a stone exposes its pores and compromises its quality and durability, making it more prone to staining and water damage. To counteract the damaging effects of honing marble or granite, the property owner has to invest in time-consuming routine maintenance, such as regular sealing, diligence when it comes to cleaning up spills, and the avoidance of stain-prone substances – an impractical demand of a commercial space in particular!

Rather than honing a Cambria slab to achieve that flat finish, Cambria slabs are perfected using a proprietary technique that is unlike anything on the market today. Using these careful techniques and technologies, the quartz is able to preserve its nonporous, maintenance-free properties even with a soft, textured finish.

“With Cambria Matte™, we’ve perfected a first-of-its-kind surface finish through our unique and proprietary technologies. Cambria Matte™ offers a low-sheen option that preserves the same superior performance and maintenance-free benefits our customers have come to trust from Cambria,” said Peter Martin, Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Business Partner Services.

“Unlike competing honed surfaces on the market today, designs in Cambria Matte™ are nonporous; virtually eliminating surface soiling and no sealing required.”

Why Should You Choose Cambria?

Cambria quartz offers the best of natural stone, enhanced for modern life. Each of the 140+ designs is perfected by Cambria and embraces the beauty of natural quartz while enhancing the stone’s durability. Cambria products are harder than granite or marble, rated a 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale, so their surfaces are less likely to crack or scratch. They’re also heat-resistant, nonporous (so they’re easy to clean), and virtually maintenance free. There is no need to use special cleaning solutions or have the surface sealed – a little soap and water will keep your counters looking brand new. In fact, due to Cambria’s durability, the surface can be used throughout your hose – from tabletops to fireplace surrounds.

The process that creates the Cambria Matte™ finish does not compromise any of the durability that consumers expect and love from Cambria quartz, making it ideal for applications far beyond countertops. Stairs, wall cladding, fireplaces, tabletops, desktops, and more can all create a touch of elegance and maintenance-free durability with Cambria quartz, even in the Cambria Matte™ finish.

Beyond the technical specifications, Cambria is easy to design and work with. Cambria’s surfaces are consistently perfect, making them convenient for future renovations or add-ons to a home or office. As our world is constantly changing and shifting, a property owner will likely want to make changes to their current home or office layout, which would require additional surface space. Rather than worrying about finding a matching slab of marble or granite for the new surface space, Cambria quartz slabs are consistent and can always be matched exactly, so there is uniformity among each surface.

Even before the quartz surface is installed, Cambria makes it easier to envision how the final product will look within a space. With many natural stone designs, it’s imperative to see the slab in person to better visualize how it will look, and the variations in natural stone means that two portions from the same slab can look vastly different. With Cambria quartz, however, you can know that the sample will be representative of the entire slab used for your project. Take that fragment to any home or business and get a better look at how it works with the light, paint colors, countertops, and your overall design aesthetic without worrying about being surprised by the final product, or having to make a separate trip to see a large stone slab. For designs that include broader movement, it is recommended that you view a full slab, since a smaller sample size may not be large enough to fully capture the movement.

The Benefits of a Matte Finish

Although many designers adore the Cambria High Gloss finish for its luxurious gleam and the way it brings out the sparkle of each quartz slab, interior design trends are embracing a more straight-from-the-earth appeal, with warmer tones and designs that closer emulate stones found in nature. The soft look of matte stone offers a warmer, more inviting tone to the space, compared to the gleaming, ice-like surface of polished countertops. For designs with bigger veins and broader movement, like Cambria’s Annicca™ design, a matte finish can soften the drama of the style, without losing the design. The more natural, less formal finish is perfectly at home in any commercial store or office building designed around natural elements.

Practically speaking, the matte finish is beneficial for concealing and minimizing the appearance of etches or scratches on the surfaces. With polished surfaces, the reflected light can highlight the imperfections caused by years of wear, including from foot traffic, weather exposure, abrasion, and more. Minimizing or camouflaging the damage requires diligent upkeep, which is especially difficult for commercial spaces that are subject to the comings-and-goings of strangers on a daily basis! While Cambria designs are scratch-resistant as a standard, the matte finish offers additional protection against any reminders of busy life.

And unlike natural stone, which can be made more absorbent and prone to staining in a honed (matte) finish over a polished one, Cambria quartz retains its stain resistance and nonporous nature.

Decisions, Decisions

As homeowners and business owners are seeking a unique, one-of-a-kind ambiance in their residential or commercial spaces, the new finish expands the ability to customize Cambria surfaces. With 140+ designs, all of which are now offered in Matte, as well as 19 edge profile options, there is virtually no limit to your design. And with the array of tools that Cambria offers – including online tools to match a given design to complementary designs or paint shades, there’s no guesswork involved.

Once you’ve determined which options you want, you can then ponder the potential to complete your vision with the different countertop edges. If, as described above, the project is best suited by a natural or rustic aesthetic, there’s no better accent than a Moraine Edge. Also known as Chiseled, Broken Edge or Rock Face, this countertop edge option features a completely unique, hand-finished rough cut that mirrors a natural stone cliff.

On the other hand, if the client follows the more modern, minimalistic trends, there are plenty of subdued options that are less ornate but just as stylish. 2cm countertops with a Shale Edge will seamlessly integrate flush with a cabinet door to give a streamlined, sleek look.

And the clients who put practicality above all else will love the beautiful simplicity of the Volcanic Edge. Rounded at the top and bottom, this edge profile (also known as a bullnose or full bullnose) eliminates any sharp corners and softens the look of a countertop, giving a more homey, welcoming feel – the same aesthetic advantages to the matte finish.

From there, choose how you wish to complement those surfaces by browsing the unique Paint Match Tool, to choose the ideal shade to showcase the stone. Through a collaboration with Benjamin Moore, Cambria created this helpful tool to suggest four Benjamin Moore paint colors that would complement your chosen Cambria design. Simply choose the design you wish to match and let the tool do the rest. Looking to use Cambria for multiple applications? With the Cambria Matte finish, you can add new dimension and depth to your space by setting a glittering, glossy surface alongside a dramatic flat texture. In Cambria’s own blog, they forecast that this sort of contrast will “take center stage” among design trends in 2017:

“Matte black kitchen cabinets with crisp, white contrasting countertops add new dimension and drama to the space. Pops of colored cabinetry and shelving create more visual interest, while keeping the surrounding counters and paint light and neutral. In addition to contrasting colors, finishing details and textures will contrast, for example, pairing a high-gloss gold sink with a matte finish countertop.”

Best of all, all Cambria quartz surfaces come with a lifetime warranty and are backed by a first-rate customer service team and an American-based, family-owned company, so your beautiful design will last a lifetime.

There is a time to shine, but for all other occasions, Cambria matte provides an unexpected, tactile advantage over the intimidating glare of polished surfaces.
